What do you think is most important for being a disciple of Jesus? (Click to Tweet)
Commitment? Faithfulness? Discipline? Moral goodness? Sound theology? These are all good things, but I don't believe they are what Jesus is looking for as priority number one.
So... what is the one thing Jesus requires of His followers? A story of restoration gives some great insight into this.
Our nation thrives on what's popular. We (North) Americans are a nation of consumers. This has become the earmark of our culture and the engine of our economy.
Sadly, the American church often reflects this consumerist identity.
People seek churches and ministries that appeal to them, and churches and ministries get trapped into making themselves more appealing.
Where do you shop for clothes? Do you go to thrift stores, big-box discount chain stores, trendy boutiques, or high-end stores? Or is most of your shopping online?
When do you shop? Do you wait for clearance sales or Black Fridays? Are you a last minute shopper or do you plan your shopping trips?
We Americans, known for our consumeristic culture, are overly focused on clothing. It's more than just covering our nakedness, it's often part of our identity.
But really, how important should it be? It depends on the clothing.
Quoting a truth is easier than living it out in real life. Putting truth on a plaque or poster is nice, but it doesn't change a person's life.
Memorization of Scripture is good for retention, but it won't produce transformation in a person's life on its own. What we know in our minds doesn't automatically bring change in our hearts or our self-will.
Truth doesn't bring transformation until it's transferred from thought into action, which requires an active, personal faith.
So much has been said and written about Jesus Christ over the centuries. Much of it is good and edifying, but not all of it.
Jesus—the man from Nazareth—had a polarizing effect on people. Many who followed Him were not those you'd expect. In fact, many theologians and religious leaders opposed Him.
But there's far more to the person of Jesus Christ than what is known historically. Who He is and the purpose of His presence on earth is often misunderstood.
